I'm Back!

I wasn't really gone anywhere. I just had nothing to post about and was really busy with other things. I quick update...
Emy is doing well. She is getting really big,  but is feeling fine. Em's reservation list is full but it looks like she's going to have a good number of available pups when the litter arrives. I'm going to get the puppy pen in my room ready in the next day or two and will move her into it as soon as it's done. That means Diamond is going to move back out to the dog room and she's already avoiding it like the plague.

It looks like everything is under control with all the pups in their new homes... I really HATE typing that because it is basically DEMANDING that something go wrong.

Some time this Fall, Boon is going to be bred to a Wheaten Terrier girl and I'll be helping her people place the pups. They will have their tails left long and will be CKC registered. The waiting list for THIS litter is different than my normal waiting list. If you're interested, soon is better than later for letting me know.

And a few pix

Nope

Nothing yet from Emy. If I haven't said so before, THIS is the part of puppies I dislike the most. Even more than wet newspapers 8 weeks from now!

Nothing New on Pups

Emy is being very lazy, but she is still eating small amounts of food every couple hours. I think I mentioned that girls generally stop eating 12-48 hours before labor, well, before noticible labor.

Email inquiry
I received an inquiry from a family in the "metro NYC" area and sent it on to a couple people in NY/NJ/PA. (Yes, even though I was stationed for a couple years at Ft Monmouth, I've forgot what is considered "metro NYC.") Anyway, anyone who feels like responding to the email, please contact the folks. If you live in that area and did not receive an email from me, fear not. I just pulled the addresses of a few people I'd heard from most recently. If you want to participate, let me know and I'll send you their contact information. THANKS!

Emy and Peri

Emerald first
Nothing new to report. She is still "with pup." Since she is eating (many small meals all day long,) she is not going to deliver any time real soon. The other dogs are getting as impatient as I am. They keep going over and looking in the pen, especially when Emy is out of it, as if searching for the babies. Then they walk away looking puzzled.

Peridot
Something new with her. She is actually, FINALLY, starting to look pregnant. She's developed a little belly which is visible when she's lying on her side and just looks thicker or more substantial around the middle when she is standing up. And that's all of today's news!

Update

Emy got more sleep last night than the night before. Maybe she was so uncomfortable because the pups are shifting around, getting into position for the birthing process.

AND Crockett got his rabies shot almost 24 hours ago and has not had a seizure. So I guess my vet was right when she said it was just coincidence his seizures started last year the same day he got his first rabies.

Good news all around!

Emy and a Puppy Pix

No, not Emy's puppies. But she is so big and "pointed" I've already got her set up in the whelping pen in my bedroom. According to the calendar, she has about a week to go. Something I've noticed over the years... dogs don't ever look at calendars!

Ciscos Kids
Chase ("pony") and pal

Chase weighs 31 pounds at 5 months. As usual, the pups have done something I wasn't expecting... after their tremendous growth between 8 and 12 weeks, they slowed way down. It is going to be interesting to see how big they end up at maturity.

To those of you with Maggie/Cisco pups, I would appreciate hearing from you once they turn 6 months. I am really interested in how big they are. And if you've had any problems, especially if they are unresolved, or interesting behaviors, I'd like to know about those as well.

Kentucky Derby
The prep races leading up to the Derby on May 5th are over and once again the field is wide open. A has beaten B who ran all over C who then beat A by a head. The horse who won at 109-1 odds a couple weeks ago ran yesterday and came in last. At this point, I don't have a pick. I've checked out everyone's pedigree back 5 generations and they are all kissing cousins if not more closely related. And none of them stands out as a superstar. I would love to see a Triple Crown winner again, but doubt it will be this year.

Super Bowl Pix

You probably can't read the writing on the kids' foreheads. Suffice it to say they are rooting for the Giants! Brody is from Cotton and Brogue and lives in NJ.

These 4 pups all live in Salt Lake City... Stewart (the black,) Remi, Beckett (all 3 Brogue pups, R and B from different Emy litters) and Millie (Maggie and Cisco's puppy.) I'm sure someone will refresh my memory if I have that wrong!

And Amos in Indiana, from Maggie and Cisco. FINALLY, you can see the coloring on the "black" puppies!

Thank you to everyone who stays in touch!

No pups yet. Emy is resting much better than I am. But her day is coming!
By the way, she had her last litter 10 months ago today.

"Old" Cotton puppy

This is Coco Kennedy after her first haircut. She lives in NC and really appreciated losing her heavy coat! She'll be 10 months on Saturday. Her parents are Cotton and Brogue.

No, Not Yet

She ate some breakfast this morning and has been going outside often.
Hang in there! She can't keep them inside forever.

Earthquake
Hope everyone is safe and secure!
Didn't feel a thing here (which is fine by me!)

Shipping Update

Delta has raised their fee for smaller dogs... under 15 pounds... by $50. This means those OVER 15 pounds are going to cost at least that much more to ship. I know this because this morning I shipped a puppy for a friend... pup AND crate weighed 28 pounds and the cost was $273 (with no declared value which is actually insurance.) Add in the cost of the crate, state health certificate, rabies shot and declared value and you're right around $400 for shipping.

Since Delta is my only option out of here, the rest of this post is specifically about them although it probably applies to ALL airlines.

There is some sort of disconnect between the official Delta rules, the animal reservation desk and the personnel at counters in the airports. Sometimes this works to the shipper's advantage but much more often, it results in frustration and hard feelings.

You can not make a reservation without sitting through a 2-3 minute recorded dissertation about the basic shipping requirements, with the new rules on acceptable/non acceptable crates taking up most of the time. When you finally get a person on the line, they go over all the rules... except the business on crates... unless you make sure to tell them "been there, done it more often than YOU." One of the rules I'm told about every time, and find amusing every time, is "You must be there AT LEAST 2 hours before the flight." Probably that is true at medium to large airports. Tri-Cities has one gate. Actually, we have two but the second one is used only when an aircraft is broken down in front of the first one... which happens not often, but not rarely either. If I showed up by 5:30 AM for the 7:30 flight, my counter people would NOT be happy as they are busy checking in the people for the 6:15 AM flight (who were most likely told to be there 2 hours before the flight) and don't want to deal with a dog. Technically... at least according to the reservation desk... I can ship on the 6:15. According to the counter people... forget about it.

So, shipping my friend's puppy...
she was supposed to go yesterday (Wednesday) and I got her Tuesday night. Wednesday morning, 6:10 AM, I pull up in front of our passenger terminal (we don't have a cargo facility) and reached in to get the crate which I had not inspected the night before. To my horror, it was the forbidden type... it had LATCHES holding the top and bottom together (instead of nuts and bolts.) Now, I had told my friend she was going to have to shop around for an acceptable crate as, for years, the latch kind has been what is available everywhere, especially at Walmart. No sense in going inside, so pup and I returned home and went back to bed (after I rescheduled her flight for today.) To be fair, for years I have disliked the latch crates as the latches tend to pop open... when using them, I usually put duct tape over the latches. However, they are still being marketed as "airline approved" so I'm sure my friend is not the only one who has bought one.

Luckily for me, since I could not find an acceptable crate, my groomer gave me an old one she had (refusing my offer of the new one in exchange since she is overrun with crates.) And this morning, 6 AM, pup and I were at the airport. Now here's where there is the disconnect... first the guy (who is new) says to me "Prepaid, right?" And since the choice is only collect or prepaid, I said "Yes." Remember this exchange as it comes up later. He starts checking in the pup and mentions the flight will be leaving on time... at least that is the way it looks right then (before the flight crew arrives.) I asked if the same flight the previous morning had been cancelled (which is what pup's new momma told me when I called to tell her of the change in plans.) Counter guy says "No, it was delayed because of maintenence issues... well, um, yeah, I guess you could say it WAS cancelled." Like I said, he's new and the correct airline-speak doesn't come naturally as yet. Just in passing, I said "Glad I didn't try shipping her yesterday, then, since I had the wrong kind of crate." He asked what was wrong with it and I told him it had latches holding the top and bottom together. And he says "What's wrong with that? Isn't that the way they come?" So much for everyone at Delta being on the same page. But it gets better. Some 15 minutes later, he's handing me my copy of the airbill... and he hasn't collected my check for the shipping. I pass that over to him and he says "YOU said it was PREPAID." Now, my checkbook has been out the whole time, sitting on the counter in front of me, in plain sight, check all made out to Delta except for the exact amount... since, according to the reservation folks they can only give me an estimate and the exact amount will be determined at the counter.... Which is what I tell him. And he snarls "No, prepaid means it's prepaid before you get here." When I ask how that could be, he tells me people use credit cards. And he doesn't know how to take a check. Which means he has to call in the shipping expert who happens to be working the gate, alone, and can't just walk away to come handle HIS problem. Another 15 minutes later, the lady with the experience has straighten things out and has told him more than once "We'll discuss this later...." and I left.

Here's the thing, a few years back, Delta and NW merged and at my small airport, most of the Delta people (who were actually ASA or America Southeast Airlines... personel...) left because they didn't want to take the substantial paycuts so the NW people... who had little to no cargo experience (because NW is too expensive AND has terrible scheduling) started working the Delta counter. This caused A LOT of problems for many months and I was having to book flights around the local counter's work schedules to be sure someone was there who actually knew how to use the computer. Thankfully, that has been resolved... at least to the point that new people who are just learning the system USUALLY have someone who knows what they are doing around somewhere in the airport.

Another thing, the last few times I've called the reservation desk, I've spoken with people who speak English like they are not doing in phonically. THAT is a big plus. I'm not sure it is worth and additional $50 per shipment.

Breedings
Emy's still packing around her brood internally.
And Cotton is done breeding after being covered a couple times... let's all cross our fingers. And toes. And eyes!

Peace at Last, Peace at Last!

Seems like the coughing has come to an end. Finally. It was only around 11 days, but it was a long 11 days! And nights. Even Ravin seems to be 99% recovered. The last coughing pup stopped yesterday afternoon and quiet reigned supreme last night. I would say, on the whole, the individual coughing lasted 4-5 days.

Emy
A lot of you are interested in what is going on with Em... and nothing is. She is simply NOT interested in any of the guys. I AM going to keep trying until Shadow is no longer interested, but I'm not hopeful. Cotton has not been in season yet... that I know of!... and she's next on the list, so we'll see.

Owl is here!
And he must have grown 3 inches in the last couple weeks! He is one tall puppy. And still doesn't speak much English. But he's really sweet.

Daylight Savings Time
This has nothing... well, LITTLE... to do with the dogs, but it's my blog and I can complain if I want. I HATE this time change business, whichever direction we're changing the clocks. It takes me at least a week to adjust... thank heavens I don't have to punch a time clock! And the dogs get really annoyed with me and my arbitrary revamping of their schedule. So, after much thought, I've come up with a solution. This Spring or late Winter or whenever we're supposed to "lose" an hour, we lose a half hour and we leave it lost. Forever. We do not find it next Fall or early Winter. That should even out the daylight/nightime hours quite nicely. And who cares if the rest of the world is on the hour when we're on the half hour? We're the ones in charge, right?

Doing Well (and Big News)

Everybody is fine this morning. Di's a little owly with the other dogs in the room... they can only stand outside the pen and try to see in... there's a sheet over the "walls" to give Di some privacy... but she knows they're out there and would rather they went elsewhere. That attitude will last until the pups are about a week old and then she won't care if they look at them. She won't let them in with the pups for about 3 weeks and even then she's very selective about who is admitted. This litter is fairly quiet for newborns... I did get some sleep last night... but there is one big "red" who tends to get upset whenever he can't get a nipple the second he wants one. It doesn't bother his mom at all to hear him whine... can't say the same for "grandma!"

Big News
Emy is definitely in season. Shadow will be tickled... Brogue will be ticked!

Hips!

Like mother and father, like daughter... Emy's hip results are back and she, like the rest of the family, got a "good." OFA called me a couple weeks ago, when they first got the x-rays, to verify her "breed." Apparently she is the first Whoodle they've done and the lady got a kick out of the name. However, the paperwork states "hybrid" under the breed heading. I'm going to check Keogh's and see if hers does the same or if she's listed as a Goldendoodle.

Puppy Watch
Russell and his family are breathlessly waiting for Chauncey to have her puppies. They're hoping they arrive before they leave for the annual month long visit to the coast... and I'd like to see them before they go as well. These pups will definitely be well traveled AND well socialized before they're even weaned!

Big Announcement Coming Up
If you're interested in Diamond and Brogue's pups and haven't yet sent me the info I requested or haven't gotten a copy of my contract, you need to get it done right away. I'm taking only 4 reservations... WHEN the list opens REAL SOON.

More Pictures

Lulu who lives in DUMBO New York... no lie! I love the name of that NYC neighborhood! Lulu is a Goldendoodle.

Patch who lives in the Atlanta area, sporting his nice (?) new trim. Mom (and grandma) not totally thrilled. Patch is a Whoodle.

Actually, the two are related... Shadow is Lulu's grandfather and Patch's dad... and the parti-coloring does NOT come from him.

Good News/Bad News

For me, anyway. Because of the breeding I want to do this Fall with my Goldendoodle, Keogh (Lulu's mom,) I took Brogue to the vet to see if he could be "collected" for artificial insemination. The answer was a resounding "NO! and get away from me with that cup!" That's the bad news and pretty much terminates my hope of ever having a Who-Doo litter. The next option for Keogh is my miniature Poodle Sparky. So HE went to the vet yesterday for the same procedure. And he performed like a champ. That's the good news. BUT it raises the question of whether or not I truly want to put all the money it would take to produce a mini Goldendoodle litter (probably over a thousand dollars with progesterone testing and the surgical implantation) when I know a number of breeders who have beautiful, healthy Goldendoodle pups begging for homes. Needless to say, I'm still batting this one around. I have opened a waiting list for G'dood pups with the idea that if I get enough homes lined up I'll do the breeding. And if not, I'll breed Emy and Shadow again when she comes in next month rather than waiting for her next cycle. Feel free to weigh in on this. Opinions always welcome!

Hips

In keeping with my policy of doing tests on my dogs for MY knowledge rather than because a bunch of novices and wishful thinkers believe testing makes a difference,
I've just x-rayed both Di and Brogue's hips. Mini Poodles are seldom done... most medium to toy size breeds are seldom done... but what the hey, her offspring and grand-offspring are being used to produce larger types of dogs, so it's nice to know they have a good foundation. Her hips are, in my vet's words, "classic." He said her x-rays were the kind that are copied for use in textbooks as examples of the way hips SHOULD look... and then he checked her age (5 years) and was astonished. HE expects an "excellent" from OFA. Since they were submitted at the end of the month, I think she'll get a "good." The results should be in in about 2 weeks. Now, Brogue's were just done today and this time I was the one who was astonished. They look great! And he is 7-1/2 years old! He has a congenitally defective left stifle which causes him to throw his leg out every time he takes a step. Putting his weight on that leg makes it bow out and forward (stifles don't bend forward.) It has never stopped him from doing ANYTHING he wanted to do, but I expected it would have a detrimental effect, as in abnormal wear and tear, on his left hip. Amazing how uniform the hips were and how good they looked, even given his medium weight (for a canine, not for his breed.) So, now I'm playing TWO waiting games.
And I've put off a third... going to do Emy as soon as I get done with all the trips with puppies (vet, groomer, meeting families or shipping.)
AND there's that 2 year old GORGEOUS Goldendoodle guy I have and am not using. I may do his hips as well, as an added enticement to breeders when I finally convince myself to let him go.
